Winter-Spring 2024 Summer 2024 Fall 2023 Math Labs

Algebra Readiness

For 8th and 9th graders
Six 2-hour sessions

Algebra is the language of most branches of mathematics. Everything in the high school math curriculum — with the exception of some geometry topics — is dependent on algebra. Algebra I and II, much of geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus all use the language of algebra. Needless to say, a solid grounding in this foundation subject is critical for success in high school mathematics.

The transition from the concrete world of numbers in pre-algebra to the abstract world of variables in algebra can be a difficult one. This course is designed to ease that transition. To that end, a great deal of time in the course will be spent driving home the incredibly important idea that variables always behave exactly like numbers. This principle cannot be overemphasized. If there were a “Ten Commandments” for math, this would certainly be one of them. When students finally grasp that variables follow all the rules that work for ordinary numbers, they can successfully make the leap to the algebraic way of thinking.

The second emphasis of the course will be a look ahead to many of the most common types of problems students will see in their Algebra I classes. These problems will be presented in a way that fosters understanding, as opposed to rote learning. I’m confident that after taking this class, students will hit the ground running in Algebra I.
